How does the Roamify eSIM work?

    1

    Pick the eSIM plan

From unlimited data to fixed data and even plans with calls and hotspots, we have the right plan for you.

    2

    Pay for your order

Chose the plan that suits you best and buy your eSIM card from our website or app. You will receive an email with your QR code.

    3

    Scan the QR code

It's easy. Just scan the QR code we send you and turn on data roaming from your settings. Now you can enjoy it on your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Uganda eSIM

Everything you need to know about the Uganda eSIM.

    01

When does my data plan start?

    +

Your plan starts the moment you activate your eSIM by scanning the QR code on your smartphone.

    02

Can I make phone calls and send messages with the eSIM?

    +

Unfortunately, the Uganda plan only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

    03

When will I receive my eSIM?

    +

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you purchase your eSIM. See our refund policy for more information.

    04

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

    +

You don't need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You'll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

    05

What is the network speed of the eSIM?

    +

The Roamify eSIM offers maximum speed coverage. But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

    06

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

    +

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the eSIM.

    07

Will my eSIM have a local IP address in Uganda?

    +

Not always. This plan connects through a roaming partner, so websites and apps may see an IP address registered in another country rather than in Uganda. This is normal for travel eSIMs and does not change your data allowance, speed or coverage. If a service requires a local IP address, such as some banking apps or regional streaming catalogues, connect through a local network or use a VPN set to Uganda.

    08

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM's QR code?

    +

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at support@getroamify.com or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

    09

What happens if I use up my data or ny days of validity?

    +

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

    10

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Uganda?

    +

You can choose variable plans as shown above. You can contact us at any time if you're not sure which plan is best for you.

    11

Will the connection speed be reduced?

    +

This eSIM includes unlimited data for the contracted time. However, please note that the operator may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy, as it applies to all other network users. In particular, if the operator estimates the usage of more than 90GB of data in a month, it may temporarily reduce the speed to between 256-1024KB to avoid affecting other users. This limitation is intended to prevent network saturation and will be removed within 24 hours. If you think the local operator has limited your speed, please get in touch with us by chat, and we will check if there is any incidence and how to restore your rate to the maximum speed allowed by the network.

    12

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

    +

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Roamify website. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you've made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

    13

Can I share data with other devices?

    +

Yes, you can share data with other devices. You can do this by activating the hotspot on your device.

    14

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

    +

Once you make your purchase, we will send you an email with precise instructions to install your eSIM in two ways; by scanning the QR code or by copying and pasting the manual installation codes. To install with the first option, it is essential that the QR code is printed or on another device. Otherwise, you can follow the manual installation instructions for your Roamify eSIM. If your device is iOS, you must enter Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM on your device and scan the QR code or paste the manual installation codes sent to your email. You must then follow the on-screen instructions to select your new eSIM for mobile data and calls. If your device is Android, follow the instructions we will email you to install your Roamify eSIM. Remember that your Roamify data plan should only be activated when you arrive at your destination. Once there, make sure to select your Roamify eSIM as your preferred option to make calls, then activate data roaming and also the Roamify calling plan. At Roamify, we want to make setting up your eSIM as easy as possible. For this reason, all our eSIM products come with complete instructions for easy setup. If you have any questions or need help, don't hesitate to contact our customer support team. We will be there for you 24/7.

    15

When should I set up my eSIM?

    +

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

    16

How can I check how much data and minutes do I have left?

    +

To check your remaining data balance, simply log in to our web app using the access details that we sent you via email when you made your purchase. You can also check your data balance in your device's data settings. To check your remaining minutes balance for making or receiving calls, please contact our support team. We're always happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

    17

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

    +

Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the eSIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.

    18

How can I delete the Roamify eSIM once I've used my data?

    +

You don't need to delete the eSIM. But if you want to, please see how to delete eSIM on iOS and Android.

    19

Can I use my (physical) SIM card and Roamify eSIM at the same time?

    +

Sure! You can keep your physical SIM card with your Roamify eSIM simultaneously on your device. Just make sure you choose your eSIM as your default voice line and preferred option for mobile data in your device settings. Please note that if you leave your physical SIM card activated, you might get extra roaming fees from your network provider.

    20

How do I get a refund?

    +

The eSIM is a digital product. Roamify cannot check if you have used the data plan associated with the eSIM card. Therefore, once your eSIM is delivered, we cannot offer a refund. Please see our eSIM Refund Policy for more information.

    21

    Connecting Amidst Uganda's Majestic Terrains

Uganda offers an extraordinary mix of urban life and natural wonder, with bustling cities like Kampala and Entebbe sitting in contrast to the lush, adventurous landscapes of Jinja and Bwindi. Whether you're navigating the vibrant markets of Kampala or embarking on a thrilling rafting experience on the Nile at Jinja, staying connected can enhance your journey. Bwindi, known for its dense forests and mountain gorillas, promises a unique blend of isolation and connection, challenging even the most seasoned of travellers.

In urban areas such as Kampala and Entebbe, connectivity tends to be reliable, with strong signals available for most mobile networks. Yet, as you venture further towards the picturesque yet remote regions like Bwindi and Jinja, signal strength can become patchy, particularly in the forested and mountainous areas. The national parks and some rural stretches may lack consistent mobile coverage, making it essential to plan your connectivity needs in advance.

    Before you fly

Before landing in Uganda, it’s wise to set up your eSIM, ensuring you have a working connection upon arrival in Entebbe. Download necessary apps, offline maps, and essential documents beforehand to ensure smooth travels. Once you arrive, expect to enjoy strong connectivity in the cities but be prepared for potential gaps as you travel into Uganda's stunning wilderness.

    Using an eSIM in Uganda

Answers to the questions travellers actually ask about staying connected in Uganda.

    20 questions

Does my eSIM work when I arrive at Entebbe International Airport (EBB)?

    +

Your eSIM should connect seamlessly at Entebbe International Airport if activated before your flight. Entebbe has strong network coverage, making it convenient for travelers to access services upon arrival. Be sure your device is set to automatically select available networks and eSIM is turned on. If you face issues, restart your device and ensure the eSIM is correctly configured in your settings.

How do I activate an eSIM for use in Kampala?

    +

To activate an eSIM in Kampala, begin by scanning the QR code from your provider. Kampala enjoys robust network coverage, ensuring reliable service. Before departure, verify your device's compatibility with eSIM technology and complete any required registration through the provider's app or website. This preparation minimizes delays and connectivity issues once you reach the city.

Can I use my eSIM for gorilla tracking in Bwindi?

    +

You can use your eSIM while tracking gorillas in Bwindi, although connectivity may be inconsistent due to the dense forest. Network coverage can vary significantly in the park, potentially affecting live data use. It's advisable to download maps and resources before entering the area, ensuring you remain informed even in low-signal zones.

Is there reliable eSIM coverage on the Nile River near Jinja?

    +

eSIM coverage near the Nile River in Jinja is generally decent, especially around popular tourist locations. However, the signal may weaken in remote parts of the river. Visitors can usually share their experiences online, but should prepare for potential gaps in coverage. Consult your eSIM provider for specific information on network availability in this region.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot with an eSIM while traveling through Uganda?

    +

Most eSIM plans support using your phone as a hotspot, letting you share data with other devices. This is particularly useful in Uganda, where rural connectivity might be limited. Check with your provider to confirm hotspot compatibility and ensure you have adequate data for multiple devices, especially when traveling in less connected regions.

    +See all 20 questions

How does eSIM coverage compare between Kampala and rural areas?

    +

Kampala offers strong eSIM coverage due to its developed infrastructure, providing consistent connectivity. In contrast, Uganda's rural areas, such as regions outside major towns, often have weaker signals or even no coverage. To prepare, download essential information before leaving urban regions and anticipate possible difficulties in maintaining a stable connection outside Kampala.

How can I troubleshoot my eSIM if it won't connect in Jinja?

    +

If your eSIM won’t connect in Jinja, start by restarting your device and checking network settings to ensure eSIM is active. Jinja typically has reliable coverage, but issues can arise. If problems persist, contact your eSIM provider for assistance and verify that your provider offers support in this location. Be ready with your account details for faster help.

Does my eSIM work at the Uganda-Kenya border?

    +

Your eSIM can function at the Uganda-Kenya border, provided your plan includes cross-border coverage. Many providers offer options for regional roaming in East Africa. Before traveling, double-check your plan's roaming capabilities and fees to avoid unexpected charges and ensure smooth connectivity as you cross the border.

What should I do if I run out of data while tracking gorillas in Bwindi?

    +

If you run out of data in Bwindi, options such as Wi-Fi spots in lodges or purchasing extra data via your provider's app are available. Connectivity in Bwindi may be limited, so plan data use carefully and consider preloading necessary materials. Before departure, familiarize yourself with your provider’s top-up process to ensure you stay connected during your visit.

Can I use WhatsApp with an eSIM in rural Uganda?

    +

You can use WhatsApp with an eSIM in rural Uganda, but network availability might be inconsistent. Areas outside cities like Kampala often have limited coverage, impacting multimedia message delivery and voice calls. To stay connected, leverage Wi-Fi where available and monitor your signal strength to manage communication effectively.

Is eSIM coverage available on the Kampala-Mombasa rail route?

    +

Coverage along the Kampala-Mombasa rail route varies, with stronger signals in urban areas and potential gaps in remote stretches. Major stations typically have reliable network access. For peace of mind, confirm specific coverage details with your eSIM provider and plan communication needs accordingly, especially for long transits through rural areas.

Can I use an eSIM for both voice calls and data when exploring Entebbe?

    +

Most eSIMs in Entebbe support both voice calls and data, though this depends on your plan's specifics. Entebbe generally has good connectivity, enabling various services. Verify with your provider that your chosen plan covers voice services to ensure comprehensive functionality as you explore the city and its surroundings.

Will my eSIM work in Uganda if I visit from Rwanda by land?

    +

Your eSIM should work in Uganda when entering from Rwanda, assuming your plan permits international roaming. Check with your eSIM provider about cross-border services and potential fees. Properly configuring your eSIM settings ahead of time will help ensure uninterrupted connectivity throughout your journey between these countries.

How does network speed in Uganda compare to other African countries?

    +

Network speed in Uganda is similar to many African countries, with urban areas like Kampala experiencing faster speeds than rural locations. Infrastructure in cities supports efficient operations, while rural parts, such as national parks, may see reduced speeds. Plan for variability by ensuring your device settings are optimized for the region's available technology.

What happens if my device isn't compatible with an eSIM in Uganda?

    +

If your device doesn't support eSIM technology, consider buying a local SIM card upon landing in Uganda. Providers in cities like Kampala offer prepaid SIM options that are easy to activate, helping travelers maintain connectivity. Check for kiosk locations at Entebbe International Airport or within major cities for convenience.

Does eSIM provide coverage in national parks like Queen Elizabeth National Park?

    +

Coverage in places like Queen Elizabeth National Park can be sparse due to their remote nature. Some areas within the park may have limited or no signal, impacting real-time communication. It's wise to verify with your provider and prepare for offline needs by downloading necessary information before entering the park.

Are there any specific eSIM providers recommended for travel in Uganda?

    +

Global eSIM providers with East African coverage are suitable for Uganda, though service quality can vary. When choosing, focus on providers with strong user reviews for reliability both in Kampala and less populated areas. Research specific offerings and testimonials to evaluate their performance and ensure they meet your travel needs.

Can I manage my eSIM data usage when traveling across Uganda?

    +

Most eSIMs offer applications for monitoring and managing data usage, which is essential in Uganda's variable connectivity landscape. Use these tools to track consumption and optimize settings, especially when visiting regions with limited coverage. Plan your data use smartly to prevent running out during crucial times on your journey.

Is eSIM a good option for road trips around Lake Victoria?

    +

eSIMs offer convenience for road trips around Lake Victoria due to their flexibility. Service reliability can vary, so check with your provider for specific coverage details in this area. To ensure connectivity, plan for possible weak signal zones and download any necessary travel resources before beginning your journey.

Can dual SIM phones use eSIMs in Uganda?

    +

Dual SIM phones generally support eSIM usage in Uganda, allowing travelers to maintain a primary SIM for calls while using an eSIM for local data. Ensure your device has eSIM functionality and configure settings to manage both SIMs effectively. This setup offers flexibility in choosing the best connectivity options during your stay.
