How does the Roamify eSIM work?

    1

    Pick the eSIM plan

From unlimited data to fixed data and even plans with calls and hotspots, we have the right plan for you.

    2

    Pay for your order

Chose the plan that suits you best and buy your eSIM card from our website or app. You will receive an email with your QR code.

    3

    Scan the QR code

It's easy. Just scan the QR code we send you and turn on data roaming from your settings. Now you can enjoy it on your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Japan eSIM

Everything you need to know about the Japan eSIM.

    01

When does my data plan start?

    +

Your plan starts the moment you activate your eSIM by scanning the QR code on your smartphone.

    02

Can I make phone calls and send messages with the eSIM?

    +

Unfortunately, the Japan plan only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

    03

When will I receive my eSIM?

    +

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you purchase your eSIM. See our refund policy for more information.

    04

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

    +

You don't need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You'll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

    05

What is the network speed of the eSIM?

    +

The Roamify eSIM offers maximum speed coverage. But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

    06

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

    +

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the eSIM.

    07

Will my eSIM have a local IP address in Japan?

    +

Not always. This plan connects through a roaming partner, so websites and apps may see an IP address registered in another country rather than in Japan. This is normal for travel eSIMs and does not change your data allowance, speed or coverage. If a service requires a local IP address, such as some banking apps or regional streaming catalogues, connect through a local network or use a VPN set to Japan.

    08

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM's QR code?

    +

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at support@getroamify.com or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

    09

What happens if I use up my data or ny days of validity?

    +

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

    10

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Japan?

    +

You can choose variable plans as shown above. You can contact us at any time if you're not sure which plan is best for you.

    11

Will the connection speed be reduced?

    +

This eSIM includes unlimited data for the contracted time. However, please note that the operator may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy, as it applies to all other network users. In particular, if the operator estimates the usage of more than 90GB of data in a month, it may temporarily reduce the speed to between 256-1024KB to avoid affecting other users. This limitation is intended to prevent network saturation and will be removed within 24 hours. If you think the local operator has limited your speed, please get in touch with us by chat, and we will check if there is any incidence and how to restore your rate to the maximum speed allowed by the network.

    12

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

    +

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Roamify website. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you've made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

    13

Can I share data with other devices?

    +

Yes, you can share data with other devices. You can do this by activating the hotspot on your device.

    14

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

    +

Once you make your purchase, we will send you an email with precise instructions to install your eSIM in two ways; by scanning the QR code or by copying and pasting the manual installation codes. To install with the first option, it is essential that the QR code is printed or on another device. Otherwise, you can follow the manual installation instructions for your Roamify eSIM. If your device is iOS, you must enter Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM on your device and scan the QR code or paste the manual installation codes sent to your email. You must then follow the on-screen instructions to select your new eSIM for mobile data and calls. If your device is Android, follow the instructions we will email you to install your Roamify eSIM. Remember that your Roamify data plan should only be activated when you arrive at your destination. Once there, make sure to select your Roamify eSIM as your preferred option to make calls, then activate data roaming and also the Roamify calling plan. At Roamify, we want to make setting up your eSIM as easy as possible. For this reason, all our eSIM products come with complete instructions for easy setup. If you have any questions or need help, don't hesitate to contact our customer support team. We will be there for you 24/7.

    15

When should I set up my eSIM?

    +

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

    16

How can I check how much data and minutes do I have left?

    +

To check your remaining data balance, simply log in to our web app using the access details that we sent you via email when you made your purchase. You can also check your data balance in your device's data settings. To check your remaining minutes balance for making or receiving calls, please contact our support team. We're always happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

    17

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

    +

Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the eSIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.

    18

How can I delete the Roamify eSIM once I've used my data?

    +

You don't need to delete the eSIM. But if you want to, please see how to delete eSIM on iOS and Android.

    19

Can I use my (physical) SIM card and Roamify eSIM at the same time?

    +

Sure! You can keep your physical SIM card with your Roamify eSIM simultaneously on your device. Just make sure you choose your eSIM as your default voice line and preferred option for mobile data in your device settings. Please note that if you leave your physical SIM card activated, you might get extra roaming fees from your network provider.

    20

How do I get a refund?

    +

The eSIM is a digital product. Roamify cannot check if you have used the data plan associated with the eSIM card. Therefore, once your eSIM is delivered, we cannot offer a refund. Please see our eSIM Refund Policy for more information.

    21

Connected Journeys Across Japan's Urban and Rural Landscapes

In Japan, known locally as 日本, your travels will often take you through bustling urban centres and serene natural landscapes. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are key stops on the traveller's route, each offering a unique glimpse into the country's vibrant culture and history. From riding the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto, to navigating the intricate network of Tokyo's metro, staying connected can enhance your experience. Walking through the tranquil temple paths of eastern Kyoto, a reliable eSIM can help guide you without a hitch.

Japan boasts strong mobile connectivity in its urban areas like Tokyo and Osaka, where the signal rarely falters, even underground. However, as you journey into the mountainous regions or explore more remote islands, you may find the coverage less dependable. In areas like the Japanese Alps or remote countryside, signal strength can diminish, and this can hold true on some stretches of the iconic Shinkansen and in national parks.

    Before you fly

To ensure a smooth arrival, set up your eSIM before landing in Japan. Download essential apps and maps in advance to navigate bustling cities and rural paths. On arrival, expect your connection to be robust in cities, but plan for offline navigation and information where the signal may fade. This preparation means you can focus on enjoying the diverse experiences Japan offers.

    Using an eSIM in Japan

Answers to the questions travellers actually ask about staying connected in Japan.

    20 questions

How can I activate my eSIM upon landing at Narita Airport (NRT)?

    +

Upon arriving at Narita Airport, ensure your smartphone is connected to Wi-Fi to download the eSIM profile. Follow the eSIM provider's instructions for activation, which typically involves scanning a QR code sent via email. Once activated, your device should connect automatically to a local network. If you encounter issues, restart your phone or check for any network settings that need adjustment.

Is there mobile coverage on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto?

    +

Yes, there is generally mobile coverage on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto. This route is heavily trafficked and well-served by Japan's major networks. However, you might encounter brief drops in connectivity as the train passes through tunnels and rural areas like Shizuoka Prefecture. To stay connected, consider downloading necessary content or offline maps before starting your journey.

Can I use my eSIM to access the internet while visiting Mount Fuji?

    +

Yes, eSIM internet access is available in most areas around Mount Fuji, particularly near popular sites like the Fuji Five Lakes and the starting points of popular trails. However, coverage can be patchy in more remote areas and higher elevations. To ensure uninterrupted navigation, download maps and any essential travel information to your device in advance of your visit.

How reliable is eSIM coverage on the Hakone Tozan Line?

    +

Mobile coverage on the Hakone Tozan Line is generally reliable, especially near towns like Hakone-Yumoto and tourist spots such as Gora. This scenic mountain train line passes through variable terrain, which might result in occasional weak signals. If connectivity is crucial during your trip, plan ahead to access necessary information or purchase a portable Wi-Fi device for added reliability.

What should I do if my eSIM doesn't connect at Kansai International Airport (KIX)?

    +

If your eSIM doesn't connect at Kansai International Airport, first confirm airplane mode is off. Ensure the eSIM profile is installed and active in your device's settings. Restarting the phone often resolves connectivity issues. If problems persist, check with your eSIM provider for specific network settings.

    +See all 20 questions

Can I use my eSIM for tethering while traveling in rural Hokkaido?

    +

Yes, you can use your eSIM for tethering in rural Hokkaido, provided your plan supports it. Mobile coverage is generally good, but less populated areas might have weaker signals. Test tethering where you're staying to ensure stable connectivity before relying on it for work or navigation.

Is it possible to use an eSIM for high-speed internet in Tokyo's metro stations?

    +

Yes, you can use an eSIM for high-speed internet in Tokyo's metro stations as they are equipped with robust network infrastructure. Stations on lines like the Yamanote and Ginza provide stable coverage. During rush hour, however, network congestion might temporarily slow down speeds. To avoid this, plan data-intensive tasks for off-peak hours or use station Wi-Fi where available.

How do I ensure my eSIM works when traveling to Okinawa from mainland Japan?

    +

To ensure your eSIM works in Okinawa, verify that your provider covers both mainland Japan and Okinawa. The islands rely on different network infrastructures, so check your device's network settings to ensure roaming is enabled. Consider updating your network settings upon arrival at Naha Airport to connect to the strongest available network for better performance.

What happens if I run out of data on my eSIM while in Kyoto?

    +

If you run out of data in Kyoto, most eSIM providers offer options to purchase additional data through their apps or websites. Kyoto has ample public Wi-Fi, especially in tourist areas like Gion and around Kyoto Station. Take advantage of these networks to get online temporarily. Consider downloading maps and guides offline if you're running low on data.

Are there any connectivity challenges when traveling between Hiroshima and Miyajima?

    +

Generally, connectivity between Hiroshima and Miyajima is strong. The ferry crossing might cause brief connectivity interruptions due to its distance from shore. Both Hiroshima and Miyajima have excellent network coverage in places like the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Itsukushima Shrine. To maintain contact during the ferry ride, download pertinent travel information ahead of time.

Can I use WhatsApp with an eSIM while hiking in the Japanese Alps?

    +

You can use WhatsApp with an eSIM in the Japanese Alps, but expect variable connectivity depending on your location. Major towns and tourist areas have reliable coverage, though remote trails might have limited or no signal. Consider downloading important messages or maps before starting your hike.

Will I face any issues using my eSIM when crossing from Honshu to Shikoku?

    +

No significant issues are expected when crossing from Honshu to Shikoku with an eSIM. Ensure your eSIM is active and has coverage in both regions. The Seto Inland Sea crossing typically maintains connectivity throughout, but check for any notifications from your provider about regional roaming.

Can I use my eSIM for video calls while exploring Tokyo's Shibuya district?

    +

Yes, Shibuya is one of Tokyo's most connected districts, offering strong network coverage suitable for video calls. However, be aware that during peak times, particularly near Shibuya Crossing, network congestion might affect call quality. For optimal results, plan calls during off-peak hours or find a nearby café with stable Wi-Fi to ensure uninterrupted communication.

What steps should I take if my eSIM's internet is slow in Osaka's Namba area?

    +

If you experience slow eSIM internet in Osaka's Namba area, restart your device to reset the connection or switch to airplane mode briefly. Ensure you're connected to your provider's preferred network. Network congestion, especially in crowded areas like Dotonbori, can impact speeds. For data-heavy activities, seek out places with free Wi-Fi, such as shopping malls and cafés.

Is mobile coverage consistent on ferry rides in the Seto Inland Sea?

    +

Mobile coverage on ferries in the Seto Inland Sea is usually consistent near larger islands and ports, such as those in Hiroshima and Okayama. However, connectivity can be limited when further offshore. To prepare, download any essential content beforehand. Consider using the ferry journey as an opportunity for offline activities or simply enjoy the scenic views.

Do I need a dual SIM phone to use an eSIM in Japan?

    +

No, a dual SIM phone is not necessary to use an eSIM in Japan. An eSIM-compatible device will suffice. For those with dual SIM phones, you can keep your physical SIM active for incoming calls from home while using the eSIM for local data and voice services. Ensure your phone's settings are configured to prioritize the eSIM connection.

How fast is the mobile internet speed on the Nakasendo Trail?

    +

Mobile internet speeds on the Nakasendo Trail vary. In towns like Tsumago and Magome, expect decent speeds. However, some sections of the trail are remote and might have weaker signals, potentially affecting speed. Download necessary data in advance if you plan to rely on mobile internet.

Will my eSIM work if I take a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo?

    +

Yes, your eSIM should work during a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo, as it's generally well-covered by mobile networks. Popular areas like Toshogu Shrine typically have good connectivity. Some remote spots, however, could have weaker signals. Before making the trip, confirm that your eSIM provider offers extensive coverage in the areas you'll be visiting.

Can I make voice calls with my eSIM while visiting Osaka Castle?

    +

Yes, you can make voice calls with an eSIM while visiting Osaka Castle. This historic site is situated in a well-covered urban area, ensuring strong signal and clear call quality. Confirm your eSIM plan includes voice services, as some plans might be data-only. If needed, use public Wi-Fi in nearby attractions or parks to supplement your connectivity.

How does eSIM performance compare on the JR Yamanote Line versus the Keikyu Line?

    +

eSIM performance on the JR Yamanote Line is generally excellent due to its coverage across central Tokyo. The Keikyu Line also offers good connectivity, though some sections near suburban areas might experience brief drops. Both lines are well-served by Japan's mobile networks, ensuring stable performance.
