How does the Roamify eSIM work?

    1

    Pick the eSIM plan

From unlimited data to fixed data and even plans with calls and hotspots, we have the right plan for you.

    2

    Pay for your order

Chose the plan that suits you best and buy your eSIM card from our website or app. You will receive an email with your QR code.

    3

    Scan the QR code

It's easy. Just scan the QR code we send you and turn on data roaming from your settings. Now you can enjoy it on your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions about the China eSIM

Everything you need to know about the China eSIM.

    01

When does my data plan start?

    +

Your plan starts the moment you activate your eSIM by scanning the QR code on your smartphone.

    02

Can I make phone calls and send messages with the eSIM?

    +

Unfortunately, the China plan only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

    03

When will I receive my eSIM?

    +

Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then just need to scan the QR code to activate the SIM. Note that no refunds can be made once you purchase your eSIM. See our refund policy for more information.

    04

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

    +

You don't need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You'll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

    05

What is the network speed of the eSIM?

    +

The Roamify eSIM offers maximum speed coverage. But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

    06

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

    +

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the eSIM.

    07

Will my eSIM have a local IP address in China?

    +

Not always. This plan connects through a roaming partner, so websites and apps may see an IP address registered in another country rather than in China. This is normal for travel eSIMs and does not change your data allowance, speed or coverage. If a service requires a local IP address, such as some banking apps or regional streaming catalogues, connect through a local network or use a VPN set to China.

    08

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM's QR code?

    +

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at support@getroamify.com or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

    09

What happens if I use up my data or ny days of validity?

    +

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

    10

What eSIM data plan should I choose for China?

    +

You can choose variable plans as shown above. You can contact us at any time if you're not sure which plan is best for you.

    11

Will the connection speed be reduced?

    +

This eSIM includes unlimited data for the contracted time. However, please note that the operator may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy, as it applies to all other network users. In particular, if the operator estimates the usage of more than 90GB of data in a month, it may temporarily reduce the speed to between 256-1024KB to avoid affecting other users. This limitation is intended to prevent network saturation and will be removed within 24 hours. If you think the local operator has limited your speed, please get in touch with us by chat, and we will check if there is any incidence and how to restore your rate to the maximum speed allowed by the network.

    12

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

    +

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Roamify website. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you've made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

    13

Can I share data with other devices?

    +

Yes, you can share data with other devices. You can do this by activating the hotspot on your device.

    14

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

    +

Once you make your purchase, we will send you an email with precise instructions to install your eSIM in two ways; by scanning the QR code or by copying and pasting the manual installation codes. To install with the first option, it is essential that the QR code is printed or on another device. Otherwise, you can follow the manual installation instructions for your Roamify eSIM. If your device is iOS, you must enter Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM on your device and scan the QR code or paste the manual installation codes sent to your email. You must then follow the on-screen instructions to select your new eSIM for mobile data and calls. If your device is Android, follow the instructions we will email you to install your Roamify eSIM. Remember that your Roamify data plan should only be activated when you arrive at your destination. Once there, make sure to select your Roamify eSIM as your preferred option to make calls, then activate data roaming and also the Roamify calling plan. At Roamify, we want to make setting up your eSIM as easy as possible. For this reason, all our eSIM products come with complete instructions for easy setup. If you have any questions or need help, don't hesitate to contact our customer support team. We will be there for you 24/7.

    15

When should I set up my eSIM?

    +

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need internet access to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

    16

How can I check how much data and minutes do I have left?

    +

To check your remaining data balance, simply log in to our web app using the access details that we sent you via email when you made your purchase. You can also check your data balance in your device's data settings. To check your remaining minutes balance for making or receiving calls, please contact our support team. We're always happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

    17

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

    +

Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the eSIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.

    18

How can I delete the Roamify eSIM once I've used my data?

    +

You don't need to delete the eSIM. But if you want to, please see how to delete eSIM on iOS and Android.

    19

Can I use my (physical) SIM card and Roamify eSIM at the same time?

    +

Sure! You can keep your physical SIM card with your Roamify eSIM simultaneously on your device. Just make sure you choose your eSIM as your default voice line and preferred option for mobile data in your device settings. Please note that if you leave your physical SIM card activated, you might get extra roaming fees from your network provider.

    20

How do I get a refund?

    +

The eSIM is a digital product. Roamify cannot check if you have used the data plan associated with the eSIM card. Therefore, once your eSIM is delivered, we cannot offer a refund. Please see our eSIM Refund Policy for more information.

    21

Which eSIM carrier will I connect to in China

From Beijing's Buzz to Xi'an's Relics: Staying Connected in China

Traveling through China offers a captivating blend of the ancient and modern, with bustling cities like Beijing and Shanghai serving as vibrant hubs of culture and innovation. As you walk along the Great Wall's Mutianyu stretch, ride the high-speed train from Beijing to Shanghai, or stand in awe before the Terracotta Army in Xi'an, staying connected enhances the experience. Each of these destinations presents a unique aspect of China's vastness, from urban sprawl to historical sites.

In major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, connectivity is robust, thanks to advanced infrastructure and widespread network coverage. However, as you journey to more remote areas, like the mountainous regions or along long stretches of rail, signal strength can vary. The deserts and national parks, while breathtaking, might offer limited connectivity. These areas require some planning if you need to rely on mobile data.

    Before you fly

Before you land, it's wise to set up your eSIM to ensure a seamless transition into China’s network upon arrival. Download essential apps and maps ahead of time, especially if you plan to adventure into areas where coverage might be sparse. Once in China, expect strong connectivity in urban centers, but prepare for occasional gaps in the more remote and scenic landscapes.

    Using an eSIM in China

Answers to the questions travellers actually ask about staying connected in China.

    20 questions

How can I ensure my eSIM activates smoothly upon arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)?

    +

Before arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport, ensure your eSIM is pre-activated and your device is compatible. Upon landing, restart your phone and check for a network signal. If necessary, manually select a local carrier in your mobile settings. If issues persist, connect to airport Wi-Fi to access your provider's customer support.

Can my eSIM handle data streaming while traveling on the Beijing to Shanghai high-speed train?

    +

Yes, your eSIM can handle data streaming on the Beijing to Shanghai high-speed train, as both cities feature robust 4G and emerging 5G networks. However, the train travels through tunnels and remote areas where signal strength can fluctuate. To maintain uninterrupted streaming, consider downloading some content in advance for offline viewing, especially for longer stretches without reliable connectivity.

How can I use my eSIM for navigation to the Terracotta Army in Xi'an?

    +

Your eSIM can support navigation apps when traveling to the Terracotta Army in Xi'an, where 4G networks generally offer reliable connectivity. However, as you may encounter spotty reception in rural Shaanxi, it's prudent to preload maps beforehand or use offline navigation features. This preparation ensures you have access to guidance even if temporary connectivity issues arise during your journey.

Will my eSIM work in the rural regions of Yunnan?

    +

Your eSIM will work in Yunnan, but expect weaker signal strength in rural regions. Major cities like Kunming provide stronger coverage, yet traveling to remote areas such as Lijiang or Dali might result in limited connectivity. Download crucial travel information, maps, and guides before venturing into these areas to ensure you have access to vital resources even in connectivity gaps.

Can I tether my devices using eSIM while staying in a Beijing hotel?

    +

Yes, tethering your devices with an eSIM is possible while staying in a Beijing hotel, provided your eSIM plan supports tethering. Beijing's hotels typically offer strong 4G and 5G coverage, but for additional internet access, check if the hotel provides Wi-Fi. Tethering can offer secure and personalized connectivity, especially useful if hotel Wi-Fi is unreliable or not up to speed.

    +See all 20 questions

How does my eSIM fare on a ferry ride from Shanghai to Zhoushan?

    +

On the ferry from Shanghai to Zhoushan, your eSIM might experience limited coverage as the journey crosses open water where signal availability can be sporadic. Shanghai offers solid connectivity, but as you move further away, signals can weaken. Prior to boarding, download any essential travel details or entertainment, ensuring uninterrupted access to your content even if connectivity drops during transit.

Is there 5G support for eSIMs in major Chinese cities like Shenzhen?

    +

Yes, there is generally 5G support for eSIMs in major Chinese cities including Shenzhen, renowned for its advanced telecommunications infrastructure. However, check with your eSIM provider to confirm 5G compatibility and also ensure your device is 5G-capable. This allows you to benefit from high-speed internet access while exploring Shenzhen's bustling districts or conducting business activities.

Will my eSIM work at Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG)?

    +

Your eSIM should work at Lijiang Sanyi International Airport, though expect less robust signal coverage compared to larger airports like Beijing or Shanghai. If connectivity issues arise, take advantage of the airport's available Wi-Fi networks for necessary internet access. Having contact information and essential details downloaded beforehand can be useful until consistent network access resumes.

Can I switch between my eSIM and a physical SIM for local calling in Hangzhou?

    +

Yes, you can switch between your eSIM and a physical SIM for local calling in Hangzhou, as most modern smartphones offer dual SIM capabilities. This functionality is beneficial if your eSIM plan focuses on data and you prefer using a local SIM for cheaper call rates. Manage these options through your phone's settings to accommodate both SIM requirements conveniently.

What happens if I run out of data on my eSIM while visiting the Great Wall at Mutianyu?

    +

If you run out of data at the Great Wall in Mutianyu, you'll find Wi-Fi networks at entrance areas or nearby vendors to purchase additional data packages. Given the remote nature of the Wall, it's smart to preload maps and guides on your device. Being proactive about downloading essential travel information ensures connectivity loss doesn't hamper your exploration.

Can I use WhatsApp with my eSIM when traveling through rural Sichuan?

    +

Yes, you can use WhatsApp with your eSIM in rural Sichuan, although data speeds may vary outside cities like Chengdu. The province's rugged terrain can affect connectivity, so download crucial messages, images, or documents in advance. This helps maintain communication with friends and family without disruptions, even if signal strength temporarily reduces as you explore more isolated areas.

Do eSIMs offer good coverage for traveling by train to Tibet?

    +

Traveling by train to Tibet poses potential coverage challenges for eSIMs, especially as you pass through the remote mountain regions of the Tibetan Plateau. Connectivity may exist in urban centers such as Lhasa or Xining, yet signal loss in expansive and isolated areas is possible. To stay informed, preload maps and critical travel documents before you depart.

How reliable is eSIM connectivity in the bustling streets of Shanghai?

    +

eSIM connectivity is highly reliable in Shanghai, thanks to its robust 4G and 5G networks. The city's dense urban environment might occasionally impact speeds, especially during peak usage times in areas like Pudong or Nanjing Road. Despite this, coverage remains consistent, allowing seamless internet use for most activities, from navigation to streaming, while exploring Shanghai's vibrant atmosphere.

Can I use my eSIM to access the internet while walking along West Lake in Hangzhou?

    +

Yes, using your eSIM for internet access while walking along West Lake in Hangzhou is feasible, as the area generally enjoys good network coverage. Their scenic surroundings offer a perfect backdrop for streaming or browsing. To avoid excessive data usage, activate data-saving settings on your device, allowing you to maximize your connectivity for the duration of your visit.

How do I troubleshoot eSIM connectivity if it fails after arriving at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)?

    +

If you experience eSIM connectivity issues at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, first restart your device and verify the APN settings. Should problems persist, try manually selecting a local network from available options. Additionally, utilize the airport’s free Wi-Fi to troubleshoot further or reach out to your eSIM provider’s support team for guidance, ensuring minimal disruptions as you settle in.

Will my eSIM work for internet access during a river cruise on the Yangtze?

    +

Your eSIM may face intermittent connectivity on a Yangtze River cruise, particularly in deep gorges or areas far from urban centers. Major cities like Chongqing might offer better signals, but for the majority of the cruise, expect fluctuating coverage. To ensure uninterrupted access to necessary information or entertainment, download offline content before embarking and use the ship’s Wi-Fi whenever available.

Is it easy to switch eSIM plans if traveling from China to Hong Kong?

    +

Switching eSIM plans when traveling from China to Hong Kong is straightforward, thanks to dual SIM management on many smartphones. Verify that your eSIM provider supports Hong Kong networks, or consider purchasing a local eSIM plan upon arrival for optimal connectivity. This seamless transition helps maintain connectivity for both business and leisure activities as you cross into the SAR.

Can I use my eSIM to access internet cafes in Xi'an?

    +

While your eSIM allows for personal internet use, internet cafes in Xi'an generally provide their own robust connections. Use your eSIM to search for internet cafes but expect to utilize their infrastructure upon arrival. If your tasks require larger screens or additional resources, Xi'an’s cafes offer an ideal environment separate from the confines of mobile connectivity.

How can I ensure my eSIM offers good coverage when traveling the Silk Road's ancient path?

    +

Traveling along the ancient Silk Road in China often means encountering inconsistent eSIM coverage, especially through remote stretches like the Gansu Corridor. While cities such as Xi'an or Dunhuang may provide reliable signals, rural desert regions may not. To stay prepared, preload maps and vital travel documents, and consider carrying a local physical SIM as a backup for emergencies.

What should I know about eSIM network speed while exploring the skyscrapers of Guangzhou?

    +

eSIMs typically deliver high-speed 4G and 5G connectivity in Guangzhou, even amid its soaring skyscrapers. However, densely populated areas can lead to reduced speeds during peak usage times. For important tasks like video calls or streaming, try to connect when the signal is strongest, such as in the Tianhe District, ensuring your activities proceed smoothly despite occasional network constraints.
