What Happens to Your eSIM If You Reset Network Settings?

Resetting network settings is a common fix when your phone won't connect. If you are traveling on an eSIM, the question is different: will the reset delete the plan you paid for, and what will you have to set up again?

Short answer: on an iPhone the reset does not delete your eSIM, but it clears cellular and APN settings and may turn cellular data roaming off. Here is what each phone says, a checklist for getting your travel data back, and when to skip the reset entirely.

• iPhone: Apple says Reset Network Settings resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings. It does not delete eSIMs. Delete All eSIMs is a separate option.
• Samsung Galaxy: Samsung offers separate resets for mobile network settings and for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and says neither affects your installed apps or personal data. Its page does not mention eSIMs.
• Google Pixel: Google's page gives the path to Reset Mobile Network Settings but does not list what is removed or mention eSIMs.
• Any phone: do not delete your eSIM. Roamify's help center says that once an eSIM is deleted it becomes invalid and cannot be reinstalled.

Where each phone keeps the reset #

Android screens differ by maker and version. Read each screen, and do not confirm anything that mentions erasing or deleting an eSIM or SIM.

Before you reset: what to save #

• Wi-Fi passwords you cannot easily look up again. Apple says saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords are reset.
• VPN settings you set up yourself. Apple says previously used networks and VPN settings that were not installed by a configuration profile or device management are removed.
• Your APN value, if your plan needs one. It is in the Technical Specs for your destination on the Roamify website and in your order confirmation email.
• Your order number and device model, in case you need support.

After a reset: get your travel eSIM back online #

1. Check that the eSIM line is still there and switched on. On iPhone open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data on some iPhones). On Android open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
2. Turn Data Roaming back on for the eSIM line. iPhone: Settings > Cellular > your Roamify eSIM > Data Roaming. Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your Roamify eSIM > Roaming.
3. Make the eSIM your data line, and turn off other SIMs if they interfere.
4. Check the APN. Apple says a network reset resets APN settings. Most Roamify eSIMs set the APN automatically, but if you have a signal and no data, enter it manually using Roamify's APN guide.
5. If it still will not connect, turn off automatic network selection, choose the network manually and restart the phone. The iPhone fix guide and the Android fix guide have the steps.
6. Reconnect to Wi-Fi networks. The reset cleared the saved ones.

Try these first if the problem is no data abroad #

A network reset is a bigger step than most connection problems need. Roamify's iPhone guide starts with four simpler steps: turn Data Roaming on, select the network manually, turn off other SIMs and eSIMs, and restart. The Android guide adds an APN check and a 30 second airplane mode toggle. Reset network settings only if those do not work.

Frequently asked questions #

Does resetting network settings delete my eSIM? #

On an iPhone, no: Apple lists Delete All eSIMs as a separate option. The Samsung and Pixel pages we checked do not say, so read each screen and do not confirm anything about erasing eSIMs.

Will I lose my data plan? #

On an iPhone the eSIM stays in place, so the plan is still there, although you may need to switch roaming back on. Deleting the eSIM from the phone is what cannot be undone.

Why is there no data after the reset? #

The most common causes in Roamify's APN guide are roaming turned off, the wrong APN, and the eSIM not being the active data line. Work through the checklist above in that order.

Does it reset my VPN? #

Apple says VPN settings you added yourself are removed, while those installed by a configuration profile or device management are not.

Should I reset network settings before installing a travel eSIM? #

It is not a step in Roamify's setup guides. Install the eSIM first, and reset only if you later have a connection problem that simpler steps do not fix.
