Deleted eSIM Not Going Away? How to Completely Remove It from iPhone
After deleting an eSIM from your iPhone, iOS sometimes retains a ghost entry in Settings > Cellular. This happens because the eSIM profile is removed from the carrier network but the local device record isn’t fully cleared — a known issue on iOS 16 and earlier, though it can occur on newer versions too.
This guide walks you through how to completely remove a deleted eSIM from your iPhone.
Why does a deleted eSIM still appear on iPhone? #
When you delete an eSIM, iOS removes the carrier profile but may leave behind a residual entry in the Cellular settings. This ghost entry can show up as an unnamed plan, a greyed-out line, or trigger an “Update Contacts” prompt. It’s a cosmetic iOS bug in most cases — the eSIM is no longer active — but it can be confusing and is worth clearing up properly.
When should you erase an eSIM? #
You might need to erase your eSIM if:
- You transferred the eSIM’s data plan or phone number to another device
- You’re going to sell, trade in, or give away your device
Important: Don’t erase your eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless directed to by your carrier. If you erase your eSIM, you’ll need to contact your carrier to get a new one.
Step-by-step: How to completely delete an eSIM from iPhone #
- Go to Settings > Cellular.
- Tap the eSIM plan that still appears.
- Scroll down and tap Delete eSIM (or Delete Plan if you have multiple lines).
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
- Restart your iPhone and check Settings > Cellular again.
If the entry still appears after restarting, continue to the steps below.
Step-by-step: How to completely delete an eSIM from iPad #
- Go to Settings > Cellular Data.
- Tap the plan you want to erase.
- Tap Delete eSIM (single plan) or Delete Plan (multiple plans).
- Restart your iPad and verify the entry is gone.
Still showing after deletion? Try resetting network settings #
If the eSIM entry persists after following the steps above:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted and confirm.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Open Settings > Cellular and check whether the entry has been removed.
Note: Resetting network settings will also remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN configurations. Make sure you have those details handy before proceeding.
Still showing “Update Contacts”? #
If your iPhone shows an “Update Contacts” prompt after deletion, this is a separate iOS behavior tied to the eSIM’s associated phone number — not a sign that the eSIM is still active.
The fix is simple: tap “Update Contacts” and the prompt will dismiss. The eSIM entry will disappear from your Cellular settings.
Erasing all content and settings #
If you’re preparing to sell or give away your iPhone, you can erase your eSIM as part of a full device reset. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. During this process, iOS will ask whether you want to keep or erase your eSIM — choose Erase to remove it completely.
