Best eSIM for Europe in 2026: Top Plans Compared
How Europe eSIM plans really differ: fixed data or unlimited, hotspot rules, fair-use limits, country lists and calls, using Roamify, Holafly and Airalo's own…
Roamify Editorial Team

Most Europe eSIM lists rank brands. The choice that changes your bill is the plan type: fixed data or unlimited, whether you can share data with a laptop, what happens after heavy use, which countries count as Europe, and whether you need calls.
This guide compares those differences using each provider's own published terms, checked on October 6, 2026. Roamify's Europe plans and prices come from the Roamify Europe page. For the other providers we only use what their Europe pages stated on that date, and we say when a page did not say.
Which plan fits your trip? #
| Your trip | Plan type | Roamify Europe example (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| A short city break, light use | Smallest fixed plan | 7 days, 1 GB: $2.59 |
| A week or two of maps, messaging and some photos | Small fixed plan, 3 to 5 GB | 15 days: 3 GB $4.47, 5 GB $6.50 |
| Daily video, social media or a laptop on your hotspot | Larger fixed plan, 20 to 50 GB | 30 days: 20 GB $15.00, 50 GB $29.50 |
| You don't want to count gigabytes | Unlimited, with a fair-use limit | 7 days $20, 15 days $40, 30 days $60 |
| You also need calls and SMS | A plan with calls and SMS | 30 days: 15 GB with unlimited calls and 200 SMS $15.00; 40 GB with unlimited calls and SMS $35.00 |
Fixed data or unlimited? #
Fixed plans charge for a set number of gigabytes, so you pay for what you expect to use. Unlimited plans remove the counting, but the fine print matters. On Roamify's Europe page a 50 GB plan for 30 days is $29.50 and unlimited for 30 days is $60, so unlimited costs $30.50 more.
Unlimited is also not unlimited speed. Roamify says that if the operator estimates more than 90GB of use in a month, it may temporarily reduce the speed to "between 256-1024KB". Holafly's Europe page, which sells unlimited plans only, says its Fair Usage Policy may reduce speeds for no more than one day when the network is busy. Both limits are reasonable, but neither means full speed no matter what.
If you can estimate your use, a fixed plan is usually the cheaper route. If your use is unpredictable, for example a hotspot for work, unlimited can be simpler. Netflix lists up to 3 GB an hour for HD video, so a 10 GB plan covers about 3 hours of HD at that upper figure (our Netflix data guide has the full table). Our data planning guide walks through an estimate by trip type.

Which countries count as Europe? #
Providers draw the map differently. Roamify's help center says its Europe plan covers 40 countries and names these 37: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Holafly's page says 33 countries are included and Airalo's page says 41 countries and networks. If your route includes the UK, Switzerland, Turkey or the Balkans, check the country list on the plan page before you buy.
Set up before you fly #
- Install on Wi-Fi, switch on when you arrive. Plans start on activation, not on purchase. When your plan starts explains the details.
- Calls and SMS plans need two extra steps after installing. Follow Roamify's calling plan guide.
- Keep your home SIM for calls. A dual SIM phone can use your home line for calls and the eSIM for data. See how dual SIM works.
- Know what happens at zero. If you use all your data or run out of days, the eSIM stops working until you top up. The help center explains your options.
Refunds in plain words #
Roamify's refund policy says most unused eSIM purchases are eligible for review when a request is submitted within 30 calendar days of purchase. To qualify, the eSIM must not be activated, installed, or consumed.
Frequently asked questions #
Do I need a different eSIM for each country? #
No. A regional plan covers every country on its list, and Roamify says the eSIM connects to the best available network as you enter each new country. Check the list first, as above.
Can I make calls with a Europe eSIM? #
Only on plans that include calls. Roamify's fixed-data plans have no calls or SMS, and its Europe page lists separate plans that include them. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp work over data.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot? #
Roamify's page says yes: turn on the hotspot on your phone. Holafly's page allows sharing up to 1 GB per day. Check the limit before you rely on it for a laptop.
Is unlimited really unlimited? #
It is unlimited data, not unlimited speed. According to their pages, Roamify may slow speeds after 90GB in a month and Holafly may reduce speeds for up to one day when the network is busy.
What happens if I run out of data or days? #
The eSIM stops working until you top up. The Roamify help center covers the options in the guide linked above.

How we put this together: Roamify details come from the Roamify Europe page and help center. Holafly and Airalo details come from the Europe pages linked above. All were checked on October 6, 2026, and each provider's page is the source of truth before you buy. We did not compare providers whose Europe pages we could not read in full on that date.
